Our Story

150 years of caring

Tolono Presbyterian is almost as old as Tolono itself. Just four months after building commenced in Tolono,

a Presbyterian Society of 10 members was organized.


 

1857

Presbyterian Society formed with 10 members, first meeting in a grain warehouse and later in the barroom of the railroad hotel with the whiskey covered up.

1858

First Presbyterian Church of Tolono became the first official church in the Village with 14 members.

1859

Wooden church structure built, which was used by Presbyterians as well as other religious groups.

1860

Old School Presbyterian Church of Tolono formed, as National Church was split by the Civil War. The two congregations used the same church and minister, later merging in 1868. By 1872 had membership of 125 with Sunday School well established.

1878

Home and Foreign Missionary Society formed.

1893

New stone church structure built.

1911

Tolono Presbyterian Women’s Society formed.

1915

Church parsonage bombed, probably by pro-liquor person. The current pastor had fought to keep Tolono “dry”.

1937

80-acre farm purchased from bequest of $10,000 provided by a member’s will.

1940

Westminster Guild for younger women formed.

1944

Basement dug under existing church to add kitchen, rest rooms, dining area and Sunday School space.

1946

Membership had grown to 175 and a new parsonage and garage were built.

1947

Women’s groups merged to form United Presbyterian Women.

1952

Mariners organized for young married couples, which was active statewide and nationally.

1961

Christian Education building dedicated providing 12,000 square feet of space for over 300 members, including offices, meeting rooms, classrooms, kitchen and fellowship hall.

1988

Air conditioning added to sanctuary.

1991

LOGOS inter-generational program began and first computer purchased.

1992

Hand-In-Hand Daycare opened in Christian Education building.

1993

First youth attended Camp Carew.

1997

First group attended Synod School.

1998

First youth summer mission trip to Kansas City.

1999

Lift installed in the CE building.

2002

Red Cross designated CE building as emergency shelter.

2004

LOGOS became Wednesday Youth Night (WYN)

2006

PTYG youth group launched to serve high school students in Unit 7.

2007

Church sanctuary renovation.

2008

150th year celebration.

2011

CE building roof repaired.

2015

Faith partnership formed with Philo

Presbyterian Church.

2016

First joint adult mission trip with Philo Presbyterian to Nicaragua.

2019

New roof for the church.

2020

Worldwide pandemic cancelled in-person gatherings for two months. Virtual and outdoor worship were held alternatively until inside worship resumed with masks and social distancing required.
